The stem is the long central pipe that carries smoke from the bowl down into the base, and it is the sneakiest hiding spot for old flavour. Water never reaches up inside it, so residue lines the airflow path and quietly ghosts your next session. A base clean alone will not fix that, you have to get inside the stem. Here is how to clean a shisha stem properly.
What you will need
- A long flexible stem brush that fits the bore of your stem
- Warm water
- A little lemon juice for any lingering smell
Step by step
- Take the stem off the base and remove the bowl and any grommets
- Run warm water all the way through to flush out the loose residue
- Push the long brush right through the stem, working it back and forth until it comes out clean
- For a lingering smell, run warm water with a little lemon through, then brush again
- Rinse thoroughly until the water runs clear
- Shake out the excess and stand it up to dry completely
Do not forget the grommets
The rubber grommets that seal the stem hold onto smell badly. Pull them out and soak them separately, and if one still reeks after a soak, just replace it, they cost very little. The same goes for a traditional non-washable hose, if it smells, it is a replace rather than a clean. Washable silicone hoses rinse out fine.
How often should you clean the stem?
Flush it with warm water after every session, and give it a proper brush-through during your weekly deep clean. If you have just smoked a strong, sticky flavour, brush it sooner so the next bowl tastes clean. See how often you should clean your shisha for the full schedule.
The stem and the base together are where most ghosting lives. Learn how to clean a shisha base, find out how to keep your shisha fresh between flavours, or get the whole routine in our complete hookah cleaning guide.
